Quality Assurance (QA) is a systematic approach that determines if a product meets specific requirements and specifications. It also focuses on improving processes, so the organization can deliver better quality products to its customers.

Once the processes are in place, the aim of QA is to ensure that mistakes are not passed onto the customer. Generally, there is a QA team whose responsibility it is to find and report any issues or problems within the processes.

How it works in a nutshell

The key to quality assurance is measurability. Products are checked and tested to verify if they meet the specific requirements or performance of the product specification.

ISO 9000 defines Quality Assurance as: “Part of quality management focused on providing confidence that quality requirements will be fulfilled.”

This reference to quality management ties the QA process into a company’s quality system which ensures the requirements and goals for a product or service can be fulfilled. The QA systematic approach measures, compares with a standard, monitors through processes, and engages feedback loops that provide the validation of acceptance or rejection.

There are a number of tools that can be used within the QA process, one of the most popular ones is DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control). The DMAIC tool is a data-driven quality strategy used to improve processes.
