India has a rich tradition of glassmaking which goes way back to the medieval period and spans all the way to today’s glass companies in India who are still producing excellent glassware for personal and industrial use.

The earliest mention of glassware is in the national epic of India, Mahabharata, created 400 BCE. The art of glassware got immensely popular during this period, but it wasn’t until the 16h century that the Mughals introduced the art of glass engraving to India. This fine craftsmanship skill has been developing into the daily glass items we use: bottles, bangles, beads, window pens, etc.

The glass industry in India can be divided into two categories, Rural and commercial:

  • Rural: products are created by making glass bangles in small furnaces from glass blocks produced in factories or inexpensive glass manufactured (flower pots, decorative glassware, tableware, lamps, and lamp wares).
  • Commercial: using different kinds of raw materials such as silica sand, coal, and chemicals to produce sheet glass, hollow and pressed wares (bulbs, chimneys, reflectors, and motor headlights), glass tubes, test tubes, beakers, and flat glass.

Common glass processing methods

  1. Core-forming: coating a form on the end of a rod with molten glass to make a vessel.
  2. Casting: melting glass into a mold where it solidifies and creates a glass object.
  3. (Mould) Blowing: inflating molten glass with a blowpipe to form a glass bubble that can be moulded into glassware.
  4. Pattern-molding: individually blowing molten glass into a mold to form the vessel.
  5. Tralling: using hot glass threads to mould and shape the glassware.
  6. Cutting: Cutting pieces of glass in the desired shape (usually applied when the vessel is cold).
  7. Fire-polishing: polishing glass by exposing it to a flame or heat.
  8. Pontil: a solid metal rod usually tipped with hot glass is applied to the base of a vessel to hold it while forming the mouth.
