CNC parts from India are a viable alternative to those from China today, and many of the machine shops are situated in Southern India’s Chennai in Tamil Nadu.

CNC machined parts are very popular today for both rapid prototypes and mass production parts because multiple materials can be machined including:

• Metals (Steel, aluminum, brass, titanium, etc)
• Plastics (Polycarbonate, acrylic, etc)
• Composites (Carbon fiber, fiberglass, etc)

What is CNC machining?

A CAD-designed or scanned digital industrial design of the part is made on the computer. It’s imported into the CNC machine and used to create the part/s. The material being used is loaded and fixed in place and the CNC uses a rotating bit to carve away the material until what remains is an exact physical copy of the part required (the material may also be turned itself in some cases).

Different CNC machines operate differently, for example, they may ‘carve’ on different axes, providing them with the ability to create even more complex parts.

Parts may also need to be finished before use. Finishing may include sanding (to deburr the part. for instance), polishing, adding textures such as handgrips, and more.

CNC machining is popular for both rapid prototyping and both small and large production runs these days, and there are a number of reasons for this:

• It is a fast production process
• Many different types of materials can be machined into parts
• Less waste is made compared with other manufacturing processes
• Machined parts can be provided with very accurate tolerances, produced to within 1000/inch, meaning production-standard parts can be made (not as likely with less accurate 3D printing, for example)
• It is versatile as CNC machines can produce very irregular-shaped and complex parts
